Why might a child need a tooth removed?

The most common reasons include decay that has progressed too far for the tooth to be restored, infection or an abscess around the tooth, a tooth badly damaged by injury, and occasionally orthodontic reasons — for example, a baby tooth that isn’t letting go and is blocking the adult tooth from coming through. Not every sore or damaged tooth needs to come out: your child’s clinician will examine the tooth, often with an X-ray, and confirm whether extraction really is the best option or whether the tooth can be saved with a filling, crown or nerve treatment. What to expect at the appointment

We take the time to make sure your child is completely numb and comfortable before anything happens, and we explain each step in friendly, child-appropriate language — no scary surprises. Many children manage beautifully with local anaesthetic alone. For children who are anxious, very young, or need several teeth managed at once, we can also talk through comfort options such as happy gas or treatment under general anaesthesia. The right approach depends on your child, and we’ll plan it together with you.

Holding space for the adult tooth

Baby teeth do an important job: they hold space for the adult teeth that follow. When a baby tooth is lost early, nearby teeth can drift into the gap, leaving less room for the adult tooth to erupt. For that reason, a space maintainer is sometimes recommended after an extraction — a small, simple appliance that keeps the space open until the adult tooth arrives. Your child’s clinician will advise whether one is needed, as it depends on which tooth is lost and your child’s stage of development.

Aftercare and healing

Most children recover quickly and are back to their usual selves within a day or two. We’ll give you clear, written aftercare instructions on the day, covering eating, drinking, brushing and comfort. Frequently asked questions

Will the extraction hurt?

Your child’s mouth will be thoroughly numbed first, so they should feel pressure and wiggling but not pain. Some tenderness afterwards is normal for a day or so, and we’ll guide you on age-appropriate comfort measures before you leave.

Will losing a baby tooth early affect the adult teeth?

It can — neighbouring teeth may drift into the space, crowding the adult tooth that’s still on its way. That’s why we assess spacing whenever a baby tooth is removed early, and recommend a space maintainer where it would genuinely help.

What if my child is too anxious for an extraction in the chair?

How long does healing take?

The gum usually settles within a few days, and most children eat and play normally very quickly. We’ll let you know what’s normal to expect and what should prompt a call to us — and we’re always happy to check if you’re unsure.

Does removing a tooth always mean a gap in my child’s smile?

Not always — and where it does, it’s usually temporary. If the adult tooth is close to erupting, the gap may fill naturally. Where the gap needs protecting, a space maintainer keeps room for the adult tooth to arrive in the right place.
