Preventive dental services

At Tooth Town, we know that the best treatment is prevention. Routine cleanings, flossing, sealants, and fluoride are all helpful in preventing dental disease. Preventive dentistry is also more cost effective, as small problems will cost less to repair, but can lead to serious and expensive problems if left unchecked.

It is important that children are taught at an early age about proper oral hygiene and the benefits that they can gain from it. Our paediatric dental specialists make sure that dental hygiene is fun and easy for children to grasp and learn. In addition to educating children and their parents about the proper way to brush and floss, we can also help by suggesting healthy foods options that are less likely to cause dental decay.

Each child and family is unique, and we offer a wide variety of preventive treatments to keep your child’s smile healthy, customising our recommendations to your child’s individual needs. As your child grows, circumstances and needs will change, and the hygiene schedule will be customised on an individual basis. Regular examinations will mean we can detect early signs of problems that could lead to more serious and more expensive treatments in the future.

These are some of the services that keep teeth healthy and prevent possible problems:

  • Fissure Sealants

Sealants are a non-invasive procedure where a special coating is placed in the deep grooves found on the biting surfaces in teeth that are hard to keep clean, and are used to protect both baby teeth and permanent teeth from cavities. Sealants are a great way of protecting hard to reach areas, especially as children are still learning to brush all the nooks and crannies of every tooth. Sealants can help decrease the chances of cavities from forming. However, improper hygiene, lack of blushing and flossing, as well as eating sugary foods can still cause cavities to occur. Over time, the chewing surfaces may be worn away, and the sealants may need to be replaced.

  • Cleaning / Prophylaxis

Dental cleaning involves removing the hardened mineralized plaque called “tartar” or “calculus” from teeth that ordinary home cleaning is unable to achieve. Left on the teeth, these act as irritants that cause inflammation (swelling) and bleeding of the gums (gingivitis).  Our children-friendly staff will help your child with a professional clean and remove superficial staining that tends to build between check-ups. We provide both traditional, manual removal, and pain-free ultrasound removal.

  • Mouth guards & splints

When a child begins to participate in contact sports and physical recreational activities, the risk of sustaining injuries to the mouth and teeth increase significantly. A mouthguard can help prevent or lessen the severity of oral injuries such as fractures to the teeth or surrounding bone, or cuts to the tongue, lip, and cheek. Mouth guards are made of soft plastic and cover the teeth to protect them during sporting activities.

At Tooth Town, we can take an impression of the teeth and make a custom-fitted mouth guard, tailored to your child’s activity. Custom made guard provides the best protection is as it remains in the optimal position in the mouth, and is more comfortable to wear, making it easier to breath and talk.
